Nevada County Veterans Service Officer Helps Secure Landmark State Legislation Protecting Veterans from Benefits Scams

Nevada County has played a vital role in advancing statewide consumer protections for veterans, with the county's Veterans Service Officer helping to secure landmark legislation signed this week by Governor Gavin Newsom.

David West, who serves as Nevada County's Veterans Service Officer and president of the California Association of County Veterans Services Officers, worked for two years to get Senate Bill 694 approved. He was present at the official signing Tuesday with Governor Newsom.

"It's really nice that California legislators listened to the voices of its veterans," West said. "No veteran should ever have to pay to access their benefits."

The legislation addresses a longstanding problem: unaccredited claims companies have been charging illegal and excessive fees while misleading veterans seeking help accessing U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. For years, lax federal enforcement allowed these benefit-stealing scams to flourish.

Senate Bill 694 establishes clear guardrails, oversight mechanisms, and enforcement procedures to prevent fraud and protect veterans from exploitation. The law strengthens California's already nation-leading consumer protections for this vulnerable population.

"County veterans services officers help veterans at no cost to access the benefits they have earned," West noted, highlighting the legitimate services provided by local government offices.

The new legislation represents a significant victory for veterans advocacy in California. Nevada County residents and veterans throughout the state now have stronger legal protections against predatory practices by unaccredited firms claiming to represent them before the VA.
